Sixth graders volunteer at Gaining Ground

Tenacre sixth graders spent the morning working with Gaining Ground at the non-profit’s satellite land parcel in Minute Man National Historical Park. Gaining Ground is a no-till organic farm that relies heavily on sustainable agriculture practices and thousands of community volunteers to help plant, tend, and harvest the fields. Tenacre sixth graders have been volunteering their time at Gaining Ground for many years, usually going in the fall and spring. This morning, Tenacre students worked with farmers to prepare for the winter by pulling up tarps that were preventing weeds from growing on eggplant and watermelon; rolling up tarps for storage; and brushing and raking debris off the tarps. They also added mulch and wood chips from large piles along pathways between beds, using shovels and wheelbarrows.
