What differentiates Tenacre from other elementary schools?

At Tenacre, academic rigor and small class size allow children to thrive. The two homeroom classes in grades 1–6 range in size from 12–14 students, with homeroom teachers working together as a team to plan and execute curriculum. In addition, reading and math are taught in smaller flexible groups by homeroom teachers and learning specialists. The number of groups in each grade is determined by student needs and the group size in grades 1–3 is usually 6–8 students. These small classes allow teachers to differentiate and target instruction while providing students with immediate feedback.

In addition, Tenacre embraces Special Subjects* and often integrates study throughout the curriculum, from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Students spend a significant amount of time each week in Specials. At Tenacre, the arts are not merely an add-on, but an integral part of the overall program. In each area, students are presented with intellectually stimulating content, and studies are often integrated across multiple disciplines. Each Special Subject teacher is trained in his or her discipline and only teaches that subject.

Tenacre’s small size allows students to work closely with teachers on both academic and social issues. Each child and family is individually known, because of Tenacre’s small and welcoming community.

Developing leadership skills is an integral part of the sixth grade experience. Throughout the year, students participate in the Tenacre Leads Program where they are presented with opportunities to develop leadership skills in school by leading assemblies, rotating student council leadership roles, and mentoring younger students. In the larger community, students take a leadership role in service learning activities.  When they leave Tenacre, students are prepared to jump into life at middle school and often choose to participate in leadership opportunities at their new schools.
