5th graders research peaceful protest legacies

In fifth grade, students select a person they feel honors the peaceful protest legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This "Taking a Stand" essay unit focuses on a variety of people who have stood up as a voice of change for an issue or discriminated group. From Ruby Bridges to Rosa Parks to Malala Yousafzai, students explore a wide range of individuals who represent our larger world. Through research, discussion, and intensive writing sessions, students learn more about their individual and share this knowledge with their peers and the school.
