Qualifications

  • Current LGT, CPR, and First Aid certification required. WSI certification preferred.
  • 18 years of age
  • Previous waterfront experience preferred.
  • Good health and physical stamina.
  • Emotionally mature, responsible, and punctual.
  • Team player and willing to work hard.
  • Ability to take direction from Camp Directors.
  • The desire and ability to motivate and excite campers about swimming.
  • Ability to keep campers safe in the pool area.
  • Ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.
Tenacre Day Camp maintains a pool staff of 15 – 20 Certified Lifeguards (LGT) and Water Safety Instructors (WSI). Some of our swim staff have the WSI certification, but it is not required. If you have your WSI certification, the camp will pay for part of the course. A current CPR certification is required. All pool staff teach lessons in the morning and guard in the afternoon. At Tenacre we have an unrivaled swim program. Most 3 and 4 year olds swim in the pool 1:1. Our two pools are outdoors and heated. We hire swim staff who are 100% committed to the safety and learning of all our campers.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Effectively teach the Red Cross Progressive Levels swim program to children.
  • Demonstrate the swimming skills. Break down and present the skills in a logical sequence.
  • Apply life guarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Complete progress reports for campers at the end of their enrollment.
  • Pass a pool staff LGT skills evaluation (during staff training) as stipulated by the Camp.
  • Possess knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Use all pool equipment safely and correctly.
  • Communicate and work with campers, and provide necessary instruction.
  • Maintain visual supervision of the pool area.
  • Stand for extended periods of time.
  • Identify (visual and auditory) and respond to environmental and other hazards related to campers.
  • Verbalize all necessary information and maintain open communication with the Pool Director.
  • Observe campers’ behavior, assess its appropriateness, and enforce appropriate safety rules and/or emergency procedures.
JOB SUMMARY:
Work with approximately 15-20 other lifeguard/instructors to provide pool supervision and swim lesson instruction to all campers and to ensure the physical and emotional safety of campers while in the pool area, whether during lesson or recreational swim periods. Pool staff must help evaluate new campers, write swim reports for departing campers, and practice safety procedures at all times.
 
REPORT TO: Pool Director and Head Lifeguard and is overall accountable to the Director of Summer Programs.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Submit required paperwork: Application, 3 Recommendations, Health History and Insurance Card, Emergency Info  Card, Physician’s Form, Contract, W4, I9 w/2 forms of ID, Disclosure Form, CORI, SORI, and Certifications.
  • Check-in each morning at 7:50 am, read Morning Notes, and then report to assigned arrival duties by 8 am. Duties might include: pool cleaning, playground supervision, assisting with camper arrival, or car arrival lines.
  • Instruct (give lessons to) campers in the pool following the Red Cross Progressive Skill Levels program from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 12:00 p.m. Lifeguard in the afternoon during recreational swim time.
  • Participate in pre-camp Staff Training.   Read the Tenacre Staff Manual, and follow the policies and procedures.
  • Refrigeration is provided if you bring your own lunch, or you may purchase lunch at your own expense, from local sub-shops that the Camp places orders with each day. Tenacre Day Camp is a peanut/nut aware camp.
  • Help plan, prepare and implement ‘water games’ on Special Event days that usually occur once per session.
  • Plan, prepare and participate in age appropriate activities for rainy days when outdoor activities are relocated to indoor areas. Be prepared to participate in all kinds of weather, wearing appropriate clothing.
  • Keep records of each camper’s progress. Evaluate swimmers for Red Cross swim level completion. Complete a Swim Checklist/Swim Report with appropriate comments for each camper, prior to the camper’s final day of the summer.
  • Due to skin sensitivities, please provide your own bottle of sunscreen.
  • Attend daily/weekly staff meetings as scheduled by the Pool Director or Director of Summer Programs.
  • Be available to work every day of the scheduled camp season or contracted weeks.  
  • Maintain a positive attitude while serving as a good role model to campers in personal language, appearance, manners, and health habits.
  • Know where campers are at all times. Work to ensure that your camper feels safe and included.
  • Participate in daily camper arrival and dismissal.
  • Refer all camper and staff injuries, insect stings, or illnesses, no matter how seemingly minor, to the Pool Supervisor or Head Lifeguard immediately. If necessary, a counselor will bring the camper to the nurse.
  • Lifeguard during Aftercamp swim (until 4:30 p.m.) on Tuesdays & Wednesdays, if assigned.
CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Tenacre Day Camp typically provides each swim staff with a baseball-style hat and one short sleeve t-shirt. Tenacre has been granted a waiver by the Town of Wellesley to use white clothing with red printing. The Department of Public Health mandates that the swim staff must wear their Tenacre ‘GUARD shirts and hat’ while on duty. Therefore, Pool staff must keep a hat and at least one t-shirt on campus at all times. A t-shirt must also be worn the first day of each session, at the June Open House, and at the 2 Family Picnics.
  • Wear a solid, red, one-piece bathing suit with the word “GUARD”.  If the suit does not have the word ‘guard’, there can be no additional colors (must be solid red -- MA state codes). The suit must fit so that it is not too low in the front or too low in the back. If you are unsure of the appropriateness of the suit, please do not remove the tags, save your receipt, and seek the Director of Summer Program’s approval prior to wearing. The director has the final discretion as to the appropriateness of suits worn on deck.
  • Wear the following appropriate clothing during arrival and dismissal: staff ID tag, sneakers, socks, t-shirt with sleeves (no tank tops and must be long enough to cover midsection), and appropriate length shortsAll clothing must be in good repair (no rips or tears), and cannot advertise alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, or other inappropriate emblems, symbols or logos.
  • “Any shirt or jacket worn as an outer garment by a lifeguard shall be red or bright orange and have the word GUARD printed in 4” lettering on the back”.  (MA state codes)
  • Participate in camper arrival/dismissal during inclement weather, wearing appropriate weather-related clothing.
SPECIAL DAYS:
  • Assist and participate with campers during special event days that may include: Sports Tournament and Olympics.
  • Attend the scheduled Family Picnic evening. Assist with assigned duties.
  • Assist with camp clean up on the last day. Campers are dismissed at 12 noon, and all staff work together to pack up and move supplies to designated areas from 12:00 until 4pm. Lunch will be provided to the staff.  
CELL PHONE USAGE:
  • We have a “No Cell Phone” policy at Tenacre Day Camp. Staff are not allowed to use cell phones unless you are on a scheduled break and away from your campers. Talking and texting are prohibited. Your cell phone must be stowed away.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
 
The employee works in outside weather conditions, unless thunder, lightening storms, or other unforeseen circumstances arise. In this case, swim staff supervise and entertain the campers inside. Staff may be exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions, direct sunlight, summer heat and environmental allergens. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. The employee must not have medical ailments that would interfere with performance of duty as described, and have the capacity to handle stressful situations. The employee may have to function in situations where campers might present atypical behaviors.
