Qualifications

  • 18 years or older (by 6/16/18)
  • Previous experience in a camp or school setting is strongly preferred.
  • Good health and physical stamina.
  • Emotionally mature, responsible, and punctual. Team player and willing to work hard.
  • Ability to take direction from a lead instructor and camp administration.
  • The desire and ability to motivate and excite campers in order to have a great time.
  • Ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.
Specialty Counselors do not need to have expertise in the specialty areas. Specialty Counselors can work just one (1) Specialty Week or multiple weeks.

2018 Half Day Specialty Weeks: Super Science, I Love Art, Jurassic World, Get Caught Engineering, Explore Engineering, Art Exploration, Spy Lab, Let's Dance, GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science). These Half Day programs end at 12PM. 

2018 Full Day Specialty Weeks: Gadgets & Gizmos Week 1, Camp-Struction, Gadgets and Gizmos Week 4, and LEGO-tastic. These Full Day programs end at 3:15PM.

JOB SUMMARY: Assist the Specialty Lead Instructor, provide supervision, and ensure the physical and emotional safety of a group of campers. The group size can vary between 7 – 20.  The age of the campers depends on the specialty program. General responsibilities include: Gather the specialty group in the morning and join in morning activity; Assist the instructor with activities throughout the day; Take campers to snack and playground time; When needed, take the campers to the bathroom or to the nurse; At 12PM, many Specialty Programs end, and campers need to be brought to the cafeteria. For campers staying full day, and joining with a day camp group, Specialty Counselors gather camper lunch boxes; For the campers going home at 12PM, have the campers gather all their things and sit in the cafeteria. Bring the full day campers to their groups and let counselors know if there are any materials from the day for the campers to bring home. On the first day of a new program check campers backpacks for sunscreen, epi pens etc. and bring them to the nurse. Specialty Counselors apply sunscreen to campers before outside time.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Submit required paperwork: Application,3 Recommendations,Health History and Insurance Card,Emergency Info Card,Physician’s Form,Contract,W4,I9 w/ 2 form of ID,Disclosure Form,CORI,SORI,and Certifications. Most of the paperwork can be completed online.
  • Check-in each morning at 7:50 a.m., read the Morning Notes, and then report to assigned arrival duties by 8:00 a.m. Arrival duties include the following: waiting at “the post” with campers in the cafeteria, and bringing the group to the all camp “MORNING ACTIVITY” from about 8:25am – 8:50am. Campers will need to be brought up to their assigned classroom at the end of “morning activity”.
  • Attendance: record and report daily camper attendance information to the Specialty Coordinator, or to the appropriate Director.   Each Specialty Counselor will be asked to carry a clip board which includes a list of each camper in your group, and any health notes with regards to food allergies, etc.
  • Be available to work every day of the contracted week(s).
  • Report any missing items (essentials that campers need each day at camp) such as sneakers, bathing suits, towels, and lunches to the Specialty Coordinator, as early as possible, so that they can place a call home.
  • Supervise campers and promote camper participation in all activities. Respond to any special requests by the Lead Instructor.
  • Participate in staff training, complete the online portion of the staff training, and attend all other staff meetings as scheduled (usually once per week).
  • Read the Tenacre Staff Manual, and follow the policies and procedures outlined within.
  • Maintain a positive attitude while serving as a good role model to campers in personal language, appearance, manners, and health habits.
  • Know where campers are at all times. Stay with assigned campers at ALL times unless on a scheduled break. Work to ensure that each camper feels safe and included.
  • Ensure that camper projects are sent home.
  • Sit and eat with campers at snack time and lunch time. Snack is provided by the camp. Refrigeration is provided if you bring your own lunch, or you may purchase lunch at your own expense, from local sub shops that the Camp places orders with each day. Be sensitive to individual camper allergy issues. Tenacre Day Camp is a peanut/nut aware camp.
  • Participate in daily camper arrival and dismissal. Half Day campers dismiss at 12PM. Full Day campers dismiss at 3:15PM.
  • Be responsible for keeping open communication with the Specialty Coordinator about camper progress and any problems that may arise.
  • Look over Counselor Notes that are handed out to each group. Be aware of the health and well being of your assigned campers, such as allergies, fears, homesickness, asthma, and physical limitations. Because Tenacre is not a special needs camp, all campers are able to participate in the camp activities following the schedule. The camp also hires a nurse on staff.
  • Wear appropriate clothing, which includes staff ID tag, sneakers, socks, t-shirt with sleeves (no tank tops and must be long enough to cover midsection), and appropriate length shorts. All clothing must be in good repair (no rips or tears), and cannot advertise alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, or other inappropriate emblems, symbols or logos. Each staff member will be given a Tenacre t-shirt at the beginning of the camp season that must be worn on the first day of each week (MONDAYS), at the Family Evening, and at the June Meet & Greet.
  • Supervise playground/outside time, and apply sunscreen. Each camper brings his/her own bottle of sunscreen to camp. Sunscreen is applied before specialty campers go outside. Counselors will apply sunscreen to the child’s face, neck, shoulders and lower arms only.
  • Take, and stay with campers, when brought to the Nurse. Refer all camper and staff injuries, insect stings, or illnesses, no matter how seemingly minor, to the nurse immediately.
  • Be prepared to participate in all kinds of weather, wearing appropriate clothing.
FRIDAY PRESENTATIONS:
  • Assist the Lead Instructor on Fridays when friends and family visit from about 8:30am – 9:00am. Most presentations are similar to a show & tell format.
CELL PHONE USAGE:
  • We have a “No Cell Phone” policy at Tenacre Day Camp. Staff are not allowed to use cell phones unless you are on a scheduled break and away from your campers. Talking and texting are prohibited. Your cell phone must be stowed away.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • The employee works in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, summer heat and environmental allergens. Most inside rooms are air conditioned. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. The employee must not have medical ailments that would interfere with performance of duty as described, and have the capacity to handle stressful situations. The employee may have to function in situations where campers might present atypical behaviors.
