Qualifications

The Registered Nurse is a vital person on the Camp  staff each year.  Tenacre Day Camp hires 1 Camp Nurse.  The nurse oversees the health and wellness of 200-275 campers each day (ages 3 to 12 / co-ed) and about 110 staff members.
  • RN or RN with BSN
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Proof of Malpractice Insurance
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • Ability to institute emergency procedures in the absence of a physician to offset life threatening situations.
  • Ability to identify health problems serious enough to require a physician's attention.
  • Provide a stethoscope, proof of current license, and professional nurse’s malpractice insurance.
  • Good health and physical stamina.
  • Physical ability to get to locations on camp quickly / lift or assist campers or staff.
  • Oral and audio ability to use a phone, walkie-talkie, and other emergency communication devices.
  • Ability to observe and assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions at camp.
  • Emotionally mature, responsible, organized, and punctual.
  • Team player and willing to work hard.
  • Ability to take direction from Camp Directors, and work independently of supervision in making observations and nursing judgments.
  • Ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.
PRE-CAMP RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review of all camper/staff medical information, including age appropriate immunization requirements, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public health codes.
  • Communicate with parents about medical information provided on health forms.
  • Computer entry updated or additional medical information.
  • Attend all staff training sessions the week before camp begins. And, complete the online portion of the web-based training.
  • Participate & lead specific area of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety.
Responsibilities:
  • Submit required paperwork: Application, 3 Recommendations, Health History and Insurance Card, Emergency Info  Card, Physician’s Form, Contract, W4, I9 w/2 forms of ID, Disclosure Form, CORI, SORI, and Certifications.
  • Check-in each morning at 7:50 am, collect walkie-talkie, read Morning Notes, and then report to the Health Office by 8 am.
  • Read the Tenacre Staff Manual, and follow the policies and procedures.
  • Refrigeration is provided if you bring your own lunch, or you may purchase lunch at your own expense, from local sub-shops that the Camp places orders with each day. Tenacre Day Camp is a peanut/nut aware camp.
  • Attend daily/weekly staff meetings as scheduled. Provide a written list of medical issues to the Director of Summer Programs at the conclusion of each day.
  • Be available to work every day of the scheduled camp season.
  • Handle all medical situations at Camp.
  • Compile, examine, and maintain all Health History forms, Physician forms, and Emergency Information (ER) cards for each enrolled camper or hired staff personnel.
  • Keep track of health forms that have not been received or are incomplete.
  • Discuss camper health problems with group counselors as deemed necessary by the Director.
  • Compose and distribute any necessary additional information that needs to be forwarded, relating to health issues (camper or staff).
  • Maintain permanent record of all injuries and illnesses in a Medical Log and document all accidents on accident report forms.
  • Report serious injuries to the Camp Director or Assistant Directors immediately.
  • Dispense all medications following signed Commonwealth of Massachusetts parental authorization form. (Keep/maintain daily log).
  • Purchase, store and maintain medical supplies for normal camp injuries.
  • Contact parents in case of injury or illness.
  • Supervise the application of sunscreen to campers.
  • Maintain a positive attitude while serving as a good role model to campers and staff in personal language, appearance, manners, and health habits.
  • Work to ensure that your camper feels safe and included.
  • Wear the following appropriate clothing: staff ID tag, sneakers, socks, t-shirt with sleeves (no tank tops and must be long enough to cover midsection), and appropriate length shorts. The Camp Staff T-Shirt must be worn on MONDAYS, at the Family Evening, and at the June Meet & Greet.
SPECIAL DAYS:
  • Assist and participate as needed during special event days: July Cookout, Sports Tournament, Olympics Day, and Kids Wanna Rock.
  • Attend the scheduled Family Evening. Meet and greet campers and their families, and be willing to assist with any health or medical needs that may arise.
  • Assist with camp clean up on the last day. Campers are dismissed at 12 noon, and all staff work together to pack up and move supplies to designated areas from 12:30 until 4pm. Lunch will be provided to the staff. 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • The camp nurse resides in the Health Office, which is typically located within the schoolhouse building. The office is generally air conditioned. In case of injury, the camp nurse may be exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions, direct sunlight, summer heat and environmental allergens. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. The camp nurse must not have medical ailments that would interfere with performance of duty as described, and have the capacity to handle stressful situations. The employee may have to function in situations where campers might present atypical behaviors.
  • Physical demands may include occasional lifting, reaching, bending, and/or running to a location where medical attention is needed.
